MAKHANLAL CHATURVEDI NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, BHOPAL
|
A University Campus is a sacred place of learning and knowledge. The design layout expresses symbolically and physically the importance & values of KNOWLEDGE, INTEGRITY and FREEDOM- the principles of Journalism & Communication education.
Administration and Academics are principal public areas and are directly approachable to the visitors, staff, and students, though main entrance point. Beyond Administration are the Academics. Similarly, the student hostels are beyond Academics. Further is staff housing residences. A vehicular paved pathway like a ring road provides alternative connection to all facilities. The North south axis of Pedestrian Spine describes the Campus- a clear and articulate plan for development. The axis on north links it to Bhoj Lake or Bada talab- the symbolic core of Bhopal and the north east-south west axis links the campus to Bhopal city. So the campus is rooted to the site. The architecture of the campus is a synthesis of Modern and traditional architecture. It would form a landmark campus for the State of Madhya Pradesh, deeply rooted in its Culture.
The site is located in Gora Bishankhedi village, southwest of Bhopal city adjoining Sports Authority of India Complex. The site having area of 49.53 acres has particular trapezodial shape and geometry. It has flat terrain with mild undulations across the plot having minor slopes and a small monsoon stream on west side. An existing 4m wide road runs along entire east side boundary. The site planning responds and exploits the flat character of the site. The pedestrian Spine transverses the site from North to South. All facilities are placed along it - like an Indian street. The site orientation and boundaries define the shape of the Spine.
The Main Entrance Building is described by Administration and Examination block - A grand, inspiring monumental space – the face of the Campus. It frames the open green space on a visual Axis- reinforcing the central spine. The pedestrian spine has on a north south axis; a water body followed by open area theater like a kund followed by the temple, which is followed by water double spiral which is followed by Clock cum media tower. Pedestrian circulation- a walking campus: The conventional system of road on grid breaks up the campus into separate plots. A common pedestrian spine connects the campus into one community. It creates a green natural ambiance, free of vehicles and their pollution. It enhances interaction between people. This open to sky space between buildings is symbolic for openness and freedom as well as physical open green space for meeting, interaction and dialogue. The paved ring road on the periphery of the entire site- allows vehicular connection to all buildings without interfering with pedestrian spine. All facilities are placed along it like a street- Creating a walking experience amidst different spaces in the entire campus like an Indian street.
Flexibility and future growth in a Campus is planned for increasing needs of education facilities. The campus is planned on two sides of central spine to absorb growth in planned manner, without disturbing the NS spine & thus Master plan of the campus. Every zone like Academics, Hostels & Housing can be expanded- say 2 more Academic dept buildings can be added in future to existing. The campus is networked by paved pathway for smooth access to all buildings. Easy circulation is designed throughout the complex by direct approach to buildings from ground floor arcade. The plan is conceptualized as architecture of buildings in green open spaces with natural wind cross ventilation and maximum natural sunlight. The buildings have internal courtyards, bringing in the natural light and air. The building plans are based on a grid and in modules of ease and speed of construction.
The plan follows Vastushastra guiding principles. Thus the built form is oriented with cardinal directions –the North South axis of spine and the more open spaces or voids are in the center of the campus. Administration / main building facing north direction. Administration block is at the entry part of the Spine and orientated facing North auspicious direction. The entire architectural design is based on solar movement and utilization of solar energy by energy efficient natural lighting and cross ventilation. Materials & Energy efficient measures would reduce running costs of the buildings at least over the next 100 years and would achieve enormous savings.
