HERITAGE CONSERVATION OF KALYAN CITY, NEAR MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA |
This is an urban heritage conservation project for historic Kalyan city near Mumbai. Kalyan is older than Bombay with Marathi culture similar to Pune or Nagpur city of Maharashtra. Its architecture is representative of about 400 years of history, culture and traditional habitat of Konkan region (e.g. urban traditional houses “Wada” and “Manzils”).
It is an integrated project of identification, listing and documentation of all architectural, historical and cultural buildings, precincts and natural landscape sites of Kalyan to draw conservation guidelines and plan of action with citizen’s participation - a crucial step for public awareness and implementation. It covers all 15 sq km area of the city and carried out for Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Heritage Conservation Society and Kalyan Heritage Society.
The project was recently completed with detailed Listing, Grading, Drawings and Conservation guidelines for 85 architectural, historical, cultural heritage buildings and natural sites and 3 precincts in Kalyan. It is ready made for the local authorities to notify the heritage buildings in the development plan and implement the conservation guidelines.
Today Indian cities are growing haphazardly due to urbanisation with no response to their physical (climate, geography, environment, etc.) or cultural pattern (history, traditions, etc.) and thus without any character, image or identity. This is a crucial issue for City planning and development in India. Urban heritage conservation emphasizes the history and identity for the citizens – and focus to improve both built and natural urban environment.
Our experience includes project of exactly similar nature and of an entire city in MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region) region entitled “Conserving Urban Heritage of Kalyan” and carried out for MMR - Heritage Conservation Society. The entire project was of integrated systematic identification, listing and documentation of all architectural, historical and cultural buildings, precincts and natural sites of Kalyan to draw conservation guidelines. It has three stages:
Stage I: Identification, Photo Documentation and Base drawings
