DANI HOUSE, NEAR MUMBAI
|
Dani House, Ulhasnagar (35 km north of Mumbai)
This semi-detached house is located near Mumbai and the site is about 300m from the Ulhas river on a hillock. The narrow long rectangular plot (30’ x 90’) is 7’ below the road level. The house is designed as a low-key structure within the tropical greenery of existing trees for a family of five members.
The prevalent wind flow is from the south-west direction in this area and also diagonally opposite from north-east direction from the Ulhas river. The house is composed by its form and spaces in plan and section by elements like curved wall and levels for smooth flow of air and achieves cross ventilation. The swerving curved wall wrapped along the length of the house is planned to draw breeze from both the ends and ventilate all the rooms.
It is arranged in various levels to adapt to the deep sunken site conditions and reduce earth filling. Approached by descending few steps one enters the front garden and moves through entrance verandah in the double height living room. This living is overlooked by the semi-open family space located in the physical centre of the house (almost the heart) and reached easily by a single flight of steps. A small balcony from the family room jets out in the garden and overlooks the Ulhas river. At lower level the living is followed by the kitchen & dining and bedroom opening out to the rear garden.
All the spaces at lower level are planned to flow out in the adjoining area like the kitchen in the garden where the house lady could do some activities in open to sky space. The house is also designed for future expansion of two additional bedrooms and service spaces like staircase and toilets are arranged along the common wall.
